Learn to Cook Authentic Georgian Cuisine With a Local Family in Tbilisi

Summary

Nino learned to cook from her mother, Lia and is very knowledgeable about the origin and ingredients of Georgian food and its culture and history. Lia is a trained engineer but began cooking in the 90s when jobs were scarce. She cooked food in their home and then sold it at stalls around Saburtalo. She also catered for events and could cook food for 100 people in two days! She enjoys baking and for Easter, she baked more than 120 traditional paska’s (sweet bread), bite-sized khachapuri’s (cheese-filled bread) and lobiani’s (bean-filled bread). Please note that their home is on the 4th floor and the building has a free elevator, however you need to take the elevator to the 5th floor and walk down one floor to get to the 4th floor.

Why take this tour?

You will join your local hosts Nino and Lia in their small kitchen for a 1-2 hour hands-on cooking lesson. With them, you will learn to make gebzhalia (a softened cheese dish in a mint and cream sauce from Georgia’s Samegrelo region), pkhali (a traditional Georgian dish of chopped and minced vegetables) and mchadi (Georgian-style cornbread). As the kitchen is small, you will use the dining area for most of the prep work and will join Nino and Lia in the kitchen only for the final cooking.  Nino grew up watching her mother cook and is well on her way to following in her footsteps. Lia is clearly a master of Georgian cuisine and has taught her daughter Nino well! The charming duo can also offer vegetarian meals on request.  Expect a lesson not only in making Georgian food, but on its history as well during this unique experience with locals in their home - and be prepared to eat a lot!
