Summary | London’s answer to Brooklyn. Artistic vibes, Caribbean flavour and birthplace of David Bowie |
Description | * Explore vibrant **Brixton market.** Find Jamaican yams, African fabrics to Indian tea leaves!
Take a venture into one of London’s most unusual and electrifying neighbourhoods. Holding a distinctly Caribbean flavour, Brixton glows bright with an array of art galleries, local markets, pop-up restaurants and bustling bars. Accompany a local guide and unearth the most beautiful of these, as well as its wealth of historical sites and architectural gems. Learn about its transformation from a well-to-do neighbourhood in Victorian times (having the first electrically lighted market, and department store in the City), to the centre of a deeply impoverished Caribbean community in post-war times. Hear of its place as the epicentre of racial tension in the 1980’s. A tension which led to the infamous Brixton Riots throughout the decade. Today the area is undergoing a process of revitalization and artistic flourish. Street art coats the walls, night revellers flock and the world's greatest musicians grace its concert halls. But it retains its cosmopolitan, unpolished soul. |
