Wachau Winter Walk

Summary

I created this hike especially for the winter months to enjoy the Wachau in the low season alike. We start the hike in the dreamy village of Mautern. Mautern has something special to offer: here you will find the best-preserved remains of Roman fort walls in Austria! Crossing the Danube bridge with beautiful views to the west and east, we arrive in the old town of Stein. Buildings from the Middle Ages, the Baroque and the Renaissance delight our eyes. We continue our walk until we reach the Steiner Tor - where the university town of Krems begins. There is a lot to discover here as well before we stop for lunch* in one of the local restaurants. Warmed up and energized, we start our way back. This time, we follow beautiful panoramic trails through vineyards, with wonderful views over the city, the Danube and the surrounding hills. This hike offers a perfect mix of architecture, culture and nature. Walking time is approx. 2,5-3 hours, depending on individual speed. This walk requires an average fitness level. Commuting time from/to Vienna is approx. 1 hour one-way.

Why take this tour?

I designed this hike especially for the winter time, giving visitors a chance to explore the Wachau valley in the low season alike. We wander from the sleepy village of Mautern over the quaint little town of Stein to the bigger city of Krems. The medieval buildings, many churches, hidden passages and staircases give the villages a magic touch and romantic appeal. After warming up in one of the local inns we hike back on panoramic trails through the vineyards and enjoy fantastic views on the city, the river and the surrounding hill chains.

About operator:

Hi, I'm Karin. I'm the founder of Das Leben Spüren - Embrace Life, an outdoor activity organiser, offering guided hiking tours and excursions for travellers, expats and locals. Already before that, I voluntarily organised similar trips for a global expat network. I'm a professional hiking guide and have a master in tourism & leisure management. I love meeting people from all over the world as much as I love nature. Combining both and showing travellers the natural beauties of my home country is what I enjoy most. Besides my passion for nature and exploring new trails, I love yoga, photography, gardening, fashion and delicious food. I was born and raised in Vienna, but lived, studied and worked in foreign countries, such as UK, Italy, France, US and Germany. On my tours, I invite participants to be present at the moment by finding joy and contentment in the sheer beauty of nature, rather than boring them with facts and figures.
