Guatavita Lake from Bogotá

Summary

Receive a morning pickup from your Bogotá hotel, transferring to the city’s La Candelaria neighborhood to visit the Gold Museum. Wander through the museum’s sprawling collection of more than 34,000 pre-Columbian indigenous gold artifacts, including the showcase “El Dorado Raft” piece. Leaving central Bogotá head north of the city to Sesquile, a Muisca town that means “hot water” in the “Chibcha” language. Sit down for a mid-day meal at a traditional eatery on the shores of Lake Tominé before continuing to your next visit at Lake Guatavita. Trek around the edge of this body of water, known to be a sacred site in the Muisca religious system. Legend has it that the Muisca “Cacique” used to smother his body in gold dust before plunging into the lake as his people threw gold objects into the water. Begin the trip back to Bogotá, stopping en route in Guatavita “La Nueva” town before receiving a drop-off at your hotel.

Why take this tour?

A staff member from the company will pick you up at the hotel to embark on a trip to the past. The tour will take you through the north of Bogota along the Sabana to the old Muisca town of Sesquile (that means 'hot water' in the Chibcha language). From here, we go to the Lake el Cacique Guatavita. Back in pre-hispanic times, the cacique used to perform a ceremony where he would cover his body with gold dust and immerse himself into the lake, while people threw metalwork figures as sign of worship and gratitude to the gods, particularly to the sun. The tour continues to “Guatavita La Nueva”, the new village that replaced the old one that was flooded to build the reservoir of Tomine during the second half of the twentieth century. Lunch included. At the end of the tour return to the hotel.
