Port Arthur Historic Site
About
Port Arthur Historic Site is a UNESCO World Heritage-listed convict settlement in Tasmania. Renowned as one of Australia’s best-preserved penal-era precincts, it preserves 19th-century architecture and haunting stories from the island’s convict past. Established in the 1830s, the site spans about 40 hectares and features more than 30 historic buildings, including the Separate Prison and the Gothic Revival church. Visitors can join guided tours, self-guided audio walks, and immersive experiences such as Ghost Tours and harbour cruises. Located about 90 minutes from Hobart, Port Arthur offers two-day access, dining at sunset venues, and a powerful window into Australia’s formative history.
